To Pay or Not to Pay for Smileys

Smiley emoticons are helpful email accessories that present types of informal communication cannot do without. For maximum effect, subscription can be a good option. Here are four reasons why.

Why pay when you can get them free? As there are close to six dozen websites offering smileys or animated emoticons that you can send in your emails, and mostly downloadable free of charge, it sounds exorbitant for some people to opt for subscription, isn’t it?

Regardless of how you use them – in your emails or on the pages of your favorite social networking sites – smileys or animated emoticons have come a long way from just having a few strokes (and with your “head tilted to the left” to decipher their meaning) to a plethora of smiley emoticons nowadays that expresses every conceivable human emotion.

Why pay when you can get them free? Again, that question. Yes, indeed why opt for subscription service when smileys are available sans the price tag?

The truth is smiley emoticons that you download on your desktop can be so limited when you have fully appreciated the importance of smileys in your mails, or networking activities. Smileys provide the human touch on emails; they come handy when you run out of words to say and they, with higher success rate than colored fonts and highlights, catch more attention.

Would you not pay for -

More design options. Animated emoticons that are available on low-cost subscription fees usually come in wider range of options; each emotion is expressed in many ways, which provide variation, and eliminates boredom;

More vibrant, a whole lot cuter designs. Smiley providers hire illustrators to create lovable smiley-designs for both freebies and those on subscription. It can be assumed that the best designs are reserved for the use of subscribers, for the simple reason that he, who invests, deserves the best treatment.

Wider categories. Available smileys and animated emoticon designs come in different categories; those on subscription are assured of additional categories that include more trendy designs as most illustrators stay attuned to current events that help shape their clients’ choice of which smiley emoticons to use.

Technical Support. As a way of showing gratitude to their clients’ growing patronage, most companies provide technical support to paid subscribers for a glitch-free experience while using smileys.

Investing a few dollars on subscription fees add more value in the long run because as you send smileys in your email, you improve its appearance and give it more impact. As it attracts attention, you get your message across, successfully.

Would you rather have the limiting standard of free smileys? Sure, you would not want to scrimp on a few dollars and risk the chance of getting the attention you need, and of getting the results you want with your emails, right?

Smiley-providers abound on the internet however there are only a few providing subscription –privileges. Here are some tips for you to consider before you sign-up for subscription:

1. Sizes. Do smileys come in different sizes, like small, medium or large? Different sizes of smiley emoticons add more impact on the message you want to convey in your emails, as they connote the degree of your emotion as well;

2. Spyware and adware. Make sure that your animated emoticons are spyware and adware free, as most people detest the experience, in fact these are some of the reasons why smiley emoticons –paid or freebie – do not appeal to some people.

The use of smileys has indeed set an influence on how most of us communicate, and so far the result is obviously on a positive note, otherwise companies who are in business for animated emoticons or smileys would not have proliferated like mushrooms on the internet. As trends shift from simple to more vibrant designs, available among those on subscription, the use of smileys would certainly add more impact and generate more desirable results.

Would you rather wait on a freebie? Then you could be missing out on a lot of fun!

How to Master the Art of Communicating with Email Smileys

Animated emoticons come handy when writing emails and you can’t find appropriate words to clearly express how you feel. However, they can be abused and therefore lose their purpose. Here are 10 ways to watch out for when using animated emoticons in your online communication.

In the absence of body language, communication on the internet is largely dependent on the spoken or written word, which for business communication is precisely just what is necessary. However, latest technological innovations have imitated a large part of social life on computer programs that induced people to fore go physical interaction to a more convenient, cost-efficient and a lot exciting virtual counterpart. You need not embark on a world-tour just to develop a multi-racial network of friends; social networking sites, online gaming and thousands of discussion boards and forums can easily open the flood gates of profiles on your laptop that soon enough you would have your own version of the United Nations.

But how would one person who speaks Mandarin all his life would clearly understand someone from France? Even two people who speak the same language, and live in the same house can misunderstand one another, or divorce would not have been an issue.

Putting it simply, language barrier is a challenge; words are not enough to express what one wishes to convey, and in the absence of body language on the internet, communication runs the short course of either taken for something else or flatly not understood at all. This is where free smileys or emoticons can come to your rescue.

Email Smileys or animated emoticons were conceived out of the same need to find a means to express approval or disgust, when words are too lame to convey it. In the absence of hand signals or body language, which can make communication more effortless, smiley icons or emoticons have been proven to work.

Here then are 12 tips on how to master the art of communicating with email smileys:

1. Email smileys are off-limits to business emails;

2. Choose email smileys that come in different sizes –small, medium or large - to clearly express the intensity level of your own emotions;

3. Do not send email smileys or animated emoticons in your first email; the recipient may not share your optimism in using email smileys;

4. Exercise restraint when sending email smileys; you would not want to send a kissing smiley when you barely know the other person, would you?

5. As much as words, be careful with how you choose email smileys. Take into account another person’s race, religion, sexual orientation, customs and traditions when sending smileys in your emails;

6. Do not use email smileys to harass or insult another person;

7. Do not send too many smileys in your emails; too much of anything repels, instead of attract;

8. Choose email smileys that are compatible with most email servers, such as Yahoo!Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, AOL, Earthlink, and Comcast. You would not want smileys that restrict your choice of email client to use, depending on your own convenience.

9. Do not patronize email smileys that have spyware or adware on them;

10. When you grow accustomed to using email smileys, you will appreciate more their use and the impact they provide your communication; seek out a subscription, rather than the free service.

Today, smiley icons have evolved from simple textual images to becoming a lot of characters with more expressions for everyone to use. Most email smileys can be downloaded on your desktop for free however, to fully maximize the benefits that you can derive from their use, you should opt for a full service, which you can pay in exchange for a wider range of emoticons. Nothing replaces good communication, and if email smileys help out in clearing the channels for you, a few dollars each month on subscription fees for smileys pay off in the long run.

Mastering the art of communicating with email smileys is simple, provided you follow one rule: if you are not certain, don’t send. Smiley icons serve as just accessories to communication; aids to it when words seem hard to find, but there is no way you would allow your message to get construed falsely by sending an inappropriate smiley.

In most experiences however, email smileys have been found effective. Find out for yourself!
